Thank you, Wired.com readers. You have restored our confidence in the musical tastes of the general public.
Your favorite road-trip songs are far better than those offered by the 3,000 or so people surveyed by Pioneer Electronics USA. Whereas those folks were stuck firmly in the 1980s and before, our highly intelligent and culturally diverse readers came up with a list of songs primarily from the… 1980s and before.
But your songs are cooler. Topping the list was “Radar Love” by Golden Earring, a classic that also appears on our list of the 10 best songs about cars. It’s an oldie but a goodie because we’ve all been there, driving all night, hands wet on the wheel, half-past four and shifting gears. Rounding out the top 10:
- “Rambling Man” by the Allman Brothers.
- “Runnin’ Down a Dream” by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
- “La Grange” by ZZ Top.
- “I’ve Been Everywhere” by Johnny Cash.
- “Roadhouse Blues” by The Doors.
- “The Distance” by Cake.
- “Highway Star” by Deep Purple.
- “Ramble On” by Led Zeppelin.
- “Fat Bottomed Girls” by Queen.
